Using archetypes as a reflective writing prompt

Using archetypes as a reflective writing prompt

Archetype language can offer a framework for exploring stories and personal associations. Treat it as an interpretive exercise rather than a diagnosis or a prediction.

Work through the checklist

  1. Choose one symbolic figure and describe the qualities you associate with it. Note where those associations come from: a story, an image or your own experience.

  2. Write a short scene in which that figure faces an ordinary decision. Give the character a limitation as well as a strength.

  3. Read the scene again and ask which parts feel meaningful to you. Keep any insight provisional and avoid using a label to define another person.

A useful question

Does an archetype reveal an objective personality type?

This exercise does not establish one. Its value is in generating questions and creative possibilities, not in making factual claims about identity or health.
