Build a coupon breakdown before you shop
A useful coupon plan records what you expect to pay and what you still need to check. Use the worksheet below for one shopping trip, keeping the shelf price separate from any later reward.
A reusable breakdown
Copy these headings into a notebook or spreadsheet: item and size; quantity; shelf price; store promotion; coupon value; coupon conditions; expected checkout total; later reward; actual receipt total. Leave a separate line for tax and fees. A reward earned after payment does not reduce the money you need at checkout.
Check the offer against the item
Read the coupon's product size, quantity, expiry and account restrictions. Record where you found the offer and when you checked it. If two offers appear to overlap, check their terms before including both. Save a second calculation without an uncertain offer so you can decide whether the purchase still works.
Review the receipt
Compare the actual price and discounts with your plan while the details are easy to check. Mark an unconfirmed reward as pending rather than counting it as savings. Keep the receipt until you have resolved a discrepancy. This worksheet uses your own figures; it does not promise a current store offer or a particular saving.
