Choosing plants at a seasonal clearance sale

Choosing plants at a seasonal clearance sale

A reduced price does not tell you whether a plant suits your space. Check growing requirements and condition before bringing a new plant home.

Work through the checklist

  1. Identify the plant and compare its light, moisture and mature-size requirements with the intended location. Ask about local suitability and any restrictions.

  2. Inspect leaves, stems, roots where visible and the growing medium. Ask staff about damage or stress rather than assuming every reduced plant will recover.

  3. Plan transport, a suitable container and a separate observation period away from established plants. Keep care notes specific to the identified plant.

A useful question

Should I buy a plant without a reliable name?

A reliable identification makes care and safety checks easier. If identity remains uncertain, postpone the purchase rather than guessing its requirements.
