Preparing for a community theatre audition

Preparing for a community theatre audition

An audition is easier to organise when you separate the production requirements from your own preparation. Use this worksheet before choosing a scene or song.

Work through the checklist

  1. Read the notice and record the production title, role requirements, location, access arrangements and deadline. Mark anything that needs confirmation rather than guessing.

  2. Prepare only the material requested. Time your piece, practise a clear introduction and keep a second copy of any permitted reading material.

  3. Check travel and rehearsal commitments before accepting an invitation. Write down questions about fees, safeguarding, casting decisions and the rehearsal schedule.

A useful question

What if I have little experience?

Look for the stated experience requirements. Ask whether a workshop, open reading or introductory audition is suitable, and describe your experience honestly.

Make a one-page audition brief

Divide a sheet into requested material, practical commitments and questions. Under material, write the permitted length and format; under commitments, enter dates you have actually checked. Leave unknown dates blank. Before rehearsing, compare the sheet with the original notice once more. This prevents a well-prepared piece from answering a different request. After the audition, record what you learned about the process without treating a casting decision as a complete assessment of your ability.
