Writing a brief for custom lighting

Writing a brief for custom lighting

A custom lighting brief should explain the space and intended experience before choosing a fixture. Use these questions to prepare a discussion with design and installation specialists.

Work through the checklist

  1. Describe the room, activities, dimensions and available drawings. Identify where you need task lighting, general illumination or a decorative focal point.

  2. Ask about materials, light characteristics, controls, cleaning and replacement parts. Request samples or drawings to understand scale and finish.

  3. Qualified professionals should assess electrical compatibility and installation. Agree design approvals, responsibilities, delivery and maintenance in writing before commissioning.

A useful question

Should the brief name a particular product first?

Start with the requirements and constraints. A specific reference can illustrate your preferences, but the proposed solution still needs technical and practical assessment.

Describe a lighting scene

Choose one activity in the room and describe where people stand or sit, what they need to see and what should feel visually prominent. Note any reflections, shadows or glare you have observed. Treat these as observations to discuss with the designer, not as a technical diagnosis. A drawing with dimensions and labelled activities can communicate more than a collection of attractive fixtures, while leaving technical calculations and installation decisions to the responsible professionals.
