Preparing for a disaster-risk symposium

Preparing for a disaster-risk symposium

A risk symposium can bring together research, public policy and practical experience. A learning sheet helps track the different kinds of claims and their limits.

Work through the checklist

  1. Choose a theme and record the session's location, hazard and time horizon. Ask whether the discussion concerns exposure, vulnerability, probability or response capacity.

  2. Note the data source and uncertainty behind a claim. Separate a modelled scenario from an observed event and from a recommended policy.

  3. Afterwards, list questions for further reading and the relevant responsible agencies. Do not use a conference summary as an emergency instruction.

A useful question

Can a regional example be applied elsewhere?

Only with care. Geography, infrastructure and governance differ. Identify the assumptions that would need checking before drawing a comparison.
