Getting ready for an art workshop

Getting ready for an art workshop

A workshop is easier to enjoy when its technique, pace and materials suit your needs. Use this checklist to turn a broad workshop listing into a practical preparation plan.

Work through the checklist

  1. Identify the medium and the skill being practised. Ask whether the session is introductory, project-based or intended for people with prior experience.

  2. Check which materials are supplied and which you should bring. Mention ventilation, mobility, sensory or other access requirements before booking.

  3. Bring a small reference or idea only if requested. After the session, record one technique to practise and the materials needed to repeat it.

A useful question

Do I need to make a finished artwork?

Ask how the session is structured. A study, experiment or sample can be a useful result when the purpose is learning a technique.
