Use the checklist

Write toward a voice that sounds like you

An authentic voice can emerge from specific choices rather than an instruction to be more expressive. Use a short writing exercise to notice the language and observations you naturally reach for.

Checklist

  1. Describe an ordinary place using details you would point out to a friend. Avoid adding impressive words merely to sound literary; choose the detail that makes the place recognisable to you.

  2. Rewrite a paragraph for a different audience. Notice which changes make the meaning clearer and which make the writing feel less connected to your experience.

  3. Choose one version and revise for precision. Keep an unusual observation if it serves the piece, while removing repetition that obscures it.

Questions and answers

Does authenticity mean sharing everything?

No. You can write honestly while choosing boundaries. Decide what belongs in the piece and what remains private, especially when other people's experiences are involved. A distinctive voice does not require unrestricted personal disclosure.
