Use the checklist

Prepare a focused media pitch

A media pitch works best when it connects a clear story with the needs of a particular publication. Use this worksheet to prepare the idea before writing a message.

Checklist

  1. State the story in one sentence and explain why it matters to that audience now. Separate a newsworthy development from a general description of an organisation or product.

  2. List the facts you can substantiate, available spokespeople and materials you have permission to share. Flag anything still awaiting confirmation and avoid unsupported superlatives.

  3. Read the publication's current remit and contact instructions. Prepare a concise summary with a clear proposed next step, and keep a record of which version you send.

Questions and answers

What should I leave out?

Remove background that does not help the editor assess the story. A short pitch can point to supporting information without attaching an entire archive. Check names, dates and permissions before sending; relevance matters more than a broad mailing list.
