Use the checklist

Read a studio story alongside a landscape work

A studio update can connect an artwork with a place or process. Use a notebook to explore that connection without assuming the image is a complete record of the location.

Checklist

  1. Record the artwork's title, medium and available context. Describe the colours, forms and viewpoint before reading the artist's explanation, then note what the added information changes.

  2. Separate observed details from inferences about the place or people represented. If the work refers to a named village or region, keep geographical and historical questions for further research.

  3. For a purchase, ask about the exact work, dimensions, edition and delivery terms. Respect rights when sharing images and use your own words to describe your response.

Questions and answers

Must a landscape be read as documentation?

An artwork can interpret a place through selection and technique. Ask what kind of work you are viewing before using it as evidence about real conditions. Observation and personal response can be recorded without inventing a factual background.
