A practical guide from MLMN

Use the checklist

Read an artist's update through one artwork

An artist newsletter can offer a way into a body of work. Focus on one image or object and build your response from what you can observe rather than a general impression of the whole practice.

Checklist

  1. Record the title, medium and date where provided. Describe form, colour and composition in your own words, marking details that cannot be judged from the image alone.

  2. Read any artist statement as context, then note where it changes your attention. Keep the artist's explanation separate from your own interpretation.

  3. For an exhibition or purchase enquiry, confirm current details directly. Respect rights in photographs and artworks when sharing a response, and avoid reposting material without permission.

Questions and answers

What if there is no statement?

Begin with careful observation and questions. You do not need to invent an intention for the artist. A useful response can explain what drew your attention and what further information would help you understand the work.
