Looking closely at a new painting collection
A collection announcement can be a starting point for close looking rather than an immediate purchase. Make notes on several paintings before deciding what interests you.
Work through the checklist
Record the title, medium and dimensions of each work you compare. Notice whether the image is a full view or a cropped detail.
Describe repeated colours, marks or subjects across the collection. Separate your interpretation from information explicitly supplied by the artist.
If considering a purchase, ask about availability, framing, delivery and return terms. Confirm whether the item is an original, print or another format.
A useful question
Can a screen show the painting exactly?
Screen settings, photography and scale can affect appearance. Ask for additional views or an in-person viewing when those differences matter to your decision.
